Community Services director Max Bowman has been elected president of the World Life Saving organization, an international group aimed at promoting marine safety and ocean lifeguarding.
Doug D’Arnall, city beach services manager, was named secretary general of the organization at its recent meeting in Queensland, Australia. Both men will preside over the group for two-year terms.
The 20-year-old international organization----which has members from the United States, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and other countries--was formed to establish worldwide communication in the field of marine safety and lifeguarding. Promoting educational programs and modern lifesaving techniques and equipment are other aims of the group.
Bowman has said he is interested in the formation of an international museum and hall of fame for lifeguards in Huntington Beach because “it would bring visitors from around the world to Southern California,” according to city spokesman Dave Kelly.
