U.S. Olympic Boxing Coach ‘Not Assigned’ After Altercation

Times Staff Writer

Ken Adams, head coach of the United States Olympic boxing team, is presently “not assigned” after an altercation with a USA Amateur Boxing Federation staff member May 13 at the federation’s Colorado Springs, Colo., headquarters.

“Ken did have a problem . . . and the incident is currently going through administrative procedures,” said Jim Fox, executive director of the USA/ABF. Fox said Saturday the USA/ABF has “filed charges” against Adams, but he declined further comment.

It was learned, however, that the incident involved a confrontation between Adams, 47, and USA/ABF controller Kerstan Dahl.

Adams, a 30-year Army man who is a Fort Hood, Tex., sergeant, has coached Army and USA/ABF international teams since 1973. He was named the Olympic team’s head coach last November.

The May 13 incident will be reviewed by the USA/ABF’s registration committee on June 11, and it could recommend to the federation’s board that Adams be relieved of his Olympic assignment. If that happens, one of two Olympic assistant coaches, Tom Coulter of Syracuse or Larry Ramirez of Fontana, could be promoted to the top spot.

One USA/ABF executive, asking not to be identified, said the May 13 incident was Adams’ second such incident this year in Colorado Springs.
