CBS Sports won the U.S. television rights to the 1992 Olympic Winter Games at Albertville, France, for $243 million, the network and the International Olympic Committee announced.
CBS won the rights after ABC, which has broadcast 10 of the last 12 Olympics, dropped out to protest the IOC’s bidding procedure.
NBC Sports, which paid $300 million for the rights to the Summer Games it will televise this September, bid $175 million, sources said.
ABC, which paid $309 million for the 1988 Calgary Winter Games, has complained that the bidding procedure had been changed from one-round bids to several rounds in order to get higher prices for the Games. Olympic officials have called the process fair. (Details in Calendar).
