Oral questioning of prospective jurors began in former Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham’s criminal trial in Phoenix on charges of concealing a $350,000 campaign loan. Mecham and his co-defendant and brother, Willard Mecham, watched intently as the prosecution and defense lawyers and Judge Michael Ryan of Maricopa County Superior Court asked potential jurors whether they could be fair. Nine of the 51 prospective jurors were questioned during the morning session, and one was excused after acknowledging he was biased.
