John David House, 83, one of the founders of the 110,000-member United Rubber Workers union. House, who was involved in the union for five decades, went to work for B. F. Goodrich after graduating from high school in Akron, Ohio. When Goodrich laid him off, House worked for a short time for Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. and then became a tire builder for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. House was at the Portage Hotel in Akron when the URW was founded on Sept. 12, 1935. He was the first president of Local 2 in Akron, serving from 1935 to 1940, and served in several other positions with the union before he retired in 1969. In Akron on Sunday.
