Stevens and Day Warm Up for Preakness by Scoring Stakes Victories at Pimlico

BALTIMORE — Gary Stevens and Pat Day, who finished 1-2 in the Kentucky Derby with Winning Colors and Forty Niner, warmed up for a rematch in today’s Preakness by winning stakes at Pimlico Friday.
Although the $109,300 Dixie Handicap was switched to the dirt from the turf because of rain, and lengthened by a furlong to 1 5/8 miles, Kadial, a California shipper who had run mostly on grass, was the wire-to-wire 7-length winner under Stevens.
Kadial, making only his third start on dirt, paid $5.80 to win as the second choice in a field of five, with Top Guest second and Milesius third. Kadial’s time was 2:18 2/5.
Costly Shoes, ridden by Day, rallied in the stretch to win the $159,100 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes by a length over favored Thirty Eight Go Go, with Lost Kitty another 2 3/4 lengths back in third.
Costly Shoes paid $15.40 in a six-horse field, running 1 1/16 miles in 1:44 4/5s on a muddy track.
