Instead of volatile Bob Knight, the University of New Mexico settled for Dave Bliss of Southern Methodist University as their new basketball coach.

“Dave possesses the qualities we value for the basketball program, for the university community and for the state of New Mexico,” university President Gerald May said. “He is a leader. He is dedicated to academic excellence and he is committed to the community.”

Bliss replaces Gary Colson, who resigned under pressure last month.
