The World : Marcos Loyalists in Clash
Manila police clashed with thousands of demonstrators marching on the presidential palace to press demands that ousted dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos be allowed to return to the Philippines for his mother’s funeral. Witnesses said police lobbed tear-gas grenades, hurled smoke bombs and charged into the crowd of about 5,000 Marcos loyalists. At least two people were injured. The protest was the latest of several staged by Marcos supporters after the death of his 95-year-old mother, Josefa Edralin-Marcos, on May 4. No date has been set for her burial. President Corazon Aquino has refused to permit Marcos to return for the funeral but said his children would be allowed to attend services if they officially sought permission.
