Local News in Brief : 2 Area Elementary Schools Win U.S. Award for Excellence

Two area elementary schools were among 287 winners of the U.S. Department of Education’s 1987-88 School Recognition Program, it was announced Wednesday.

Balboa Boulevard Gifted/High Ability Magnet School in Northridge and Los Primeros Elementary, a Camarillo school that emphasizes basic education, were chosen from more than 600 nominated by state school superintendents or the Council for American Private Education.

Education Secretary William J. Bennett said the winning schools “are as diverse as the nation itself, but they also share many common attributes--a commitment to learning, to high standards and to excellence.”

The schools were screened for qualities that Bennett’s department believes contribute to teachers’ effectiveness and students’ success. Schools were judged on their stated philosophies and goals, organization, leadership, curricula, instruction, character development techniques and prowess in community relations.

Principals of the winning schools will be invited to Washington this fall to receive a “flag of excellence.”
