VIDEO CHARTS : The Public’s Taking Young Actors Home

Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

Three sexy actors are dominating the Top 15 of Billboard magazine’s rental chart. Robert Downey Jr., who’s become a power in the rental market, has two movies in the Top 10--a rarity. He’s the big lure in “Less Than Zero” (No. 9) and “The Pick-Up Artist” (No. 10). Two other actors have two films in the Top 15. Kevin Costner has “The Untouchables” (No. 1) and “No Way Out” (No. 13). Dennis Quaid has “Innerspace” (No. 6) and “The Big Easy” (No. 12). But fans won’t rush to rent sexy male stars in just any movie. For instance, “No Man’s Land,” starring Charlie Sheen, has done just modest rental business, slipping to No. 34 in the rental Top 40. And neither “The Big Town” (No. 36), featuring Matt Dillon, nor “Dancers” (No. 40), with Mikhail Baryshnikov, has been a very popular rental. “Callanetics” is still the leader of the sales chart, which measures sales to retailers and distributors.

* “Someone to Watch Over Me,” a thriller starring Tom Berenger and Mimi Rogers, is one of few recent releases with a good shot at making the rental Top 10. In its second chart week, it jumped from No. 28 to No. 15.
