An earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale struck outside of Borrego Springs Tuesday but there were no reports of damage.
A spokeswoman for the California Institute of Technology said the quake occurred at 12:38 p.m. and originated about 7 miles east of Borrego Springs.
Residents of the area said the quake rattled windows and lasted between 10 and 15 seconds, but there was no damage.
“It was just a good shaker, is all,” said Len Surles, secretary of the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce. Surles said the glass surrounding his office shook during the quake.
“It was really a pretty sharp one, but it wasn’t a roller like we get sometimes, the kind like you feel it was the ground rolling around,” Surles said.
Blanca Painter, an assistant in the headquarters of the Anza-Borrego State Park, said the quake “lasted 10 to 30 seconds. We have had no reports of any damage.”
