Former New York Yankee first baseman Joe Pepitone quietly surrendered to authorities to begin serving a 6-month jail term for drug possession.

“I’m going to do it and get it over with,” said the 47-year-old Pepitone, whose work speaking at luncheons and baseball card shows dried up following his conviction in 1986 for possession of hundreds of Quaaludes.

State Supreme Court Justice Allan Marrus, acting on the request of the retired ballplayer’s lawyer, said he would recommend that Pepitone be placed in protective custody during his sentence at Rikers Island jail.
