SDSU Aims for WAC Tournament Title

San Diego State will be looking to gain an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament when the Western Athletic Conference’s double-elimination baseball tournament gets under way Thursday at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.
San Diego State (21-5, 45-16-1) opened the tournament Thursday at 12:30 (PST) against fourth-seeded Wyoming (14-13, 24-25). Hawaii (21-6-1, 40-19-1) will play Brigham Young (20-5-1, 38-16-1) in Thursday’s second game at 4 p.m.
On Friday, Thursday’s losers play at 9 a.m. and Thursday’s winners play at 12:30 p.m. At 4:30, the winner of Friday’s first game will play the loser of Friday’s second game.
The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Saturday and 4:30, if a second game is necessary.
PREP VOLLEYBALL
Poway is the top-seeded team for the first San Diego Section boys’ volleyball tournament, according to pairings announced Monday night.
Poway (9-3) was the Palomar League champion. Avocado League champion San Pasqual (13-4) was seeded second, La Jolla, of the City Conference, was seeded third and El Cajon Valley of the Grossmont League was seeded fourth. La Jolla is 11-3 and El Cajon Valley is 18-0.
First-round play begins Thursday night at four sites. Game time for each match is at 7:30 p.m.
First-round matches: Mira Mesa (9-1) at USDHS (12-1); Bonita Vista (4-3) at Mt. Carmel (11-3); Helix (11-15) at San Dieguito (8-3), and Torrey Pines (8-5) at Montgomery (10-3).
Second round play is Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
