Local News in Brief : New AIDS Test Developed

Scientists at the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte said Monday that they have developed a new test for the AIDS virus that could reduce the risk of tainted blood transfusions and help scientists study the effectiveness of experimental drugs.
Current tests detect antibodies to the virus, which can take months to develop. But John J. Rossi, a molecular geneticist at the City of Hope, said the new test would allow detection of the virus just a few days after exposure. Rossi said the test works by detecting how much genetic information from the AIDS virus is present in a person’s blood or body tissues.
