Moves by Dataproducts Bring 4th-Quarter Loss

Dataproducts reported that it lost $14.9 million, or 75 cents a share, in the fourth quarter ended March 26. Sales rose 13% from a year earlier to $96.0 million.

The loss was expected. Two weeks ago, the Woodland Hills computer-printer maker disclosed that it will relocate a New Hampshire factory to Woodland Hills, and that it plans to bring back into the United States money invested overseas, which will be subject to taxes. The moves resulted in a one-time charge to the company’s earnings of $15.8 million in the quarter.

In the year-earlier fourth quarter, Dataproducts earned $1.7 million, or 8 cents a share, on sales of $84.9 million.

For the fiscal year, Dataproducts lost $20.2 million, or 98 cents a share, as revenue rose 2% to $345.2 million.

The loss was due in part to $8.1 million in costs earlier in the fiscal year as the company bought Imaging Solutions from Reliance Electric Co., a purchase that gave Dataproducts all the rights to a new solid ink-jet printer.

In the previous fiscal year, Dataproducts earned $9.0 million, or 43 cents a share, on revenue of $338.8 million.
