The hat-happiest place in the nation is Louisville, Ky., on the first Saturday in May, Kentucky Derby day. It’s the Ascot of the ‘80s, where an amazing array of beautiful people (men and women) show up in equally beautiful hats. Styles this year ranged from simple, store-bought straws, festooned by the owners with flowers and ribbons, to genuine Christian Lacroix designs.
Hats are happening everywhere. On real people, not just in glossy magazines. Drive Interstate 10 and you’ll see hatted women whizzing home from work. Shop Sunset Plaza Drive, Lake Street in Pasadena or the mall in Malibu and you’ll see hats worn with T-shirts, shorts and sandals--and with designer clothes. Travel anywhere and they are there. Millinery is the new makeup; a way to create more glamorous effects.
