Local News in Brief : Plans for Federal Funds

The Hawthorne City Council has announced plans to allocate more than $1 million in federal Community Redevelopment Block Grant funds for local programs, including $340,000 for public works, $280,000 to rehabilitate housing, $100,000 to renovate commercial property and $110,000 for public services.
The 1988-89 public works funds include $175,000 to replace city water lines, $130,000 to rebuild streets and $35,000 for sidewalks and wheelchair ramps.
The housing funds will provide grants and loans so that low- and moderate-income homeowners can improve their properties. The funds include $86,000 in “paint-up, fix-up” grants, $5,000 in handicapped assistance grants and $147,000 in deferred-payment and low-interest loans. Also planned is a loan program for rental housing, the cost of which was not specified. Administrative costs were listed as $42,000.
Public-service allocations were $74,000 for a truancy program administered by the Centinela Valley Union High School District and $36,000 for graffiti removal.
