“Cats,” which closed Sunday at the Orange County Performing Arts Center, broke the Segerstrom Hall box office record for a one-week engagement. The previous record was held by Opera Pacific’s “Porgy and Bess.”
According to a spokesman for the Center, “Cats” grossed $753,795 for eight performances (May3-8). The Lloyd Weber musical played to 23,853 people for a house attendance of 99.6%. The show was a joint production of the Center and the Pace Theatrical Group, which is based in Houston.
“Porgy and Bess” grossed $711,482 for seven performances (Feb. 11-15, 1987). But the per-show average of $101,640 for the George Gershwin opera surpassed “Cats,” which averaged $94,244. The Center spokesman said comparative ticket prices of the two productions were not immediately available.
