Lindell Holmes of Detroit registered his 33rd knockout in 42 bouts, flattening Stevie Darnell, also of Detroit, Monday in the second round at the Forum to retain his United States Boxing Assn. super-middleweight championship.
After a slow first round, Holmes (36-5-1) knocked Darnell (25-2) down twice in the second. Holmes weighed 166 1/2, Darnell 168.
In the Stroh’s super-bantamweight tournament, Robert Shannon of Lynwood, Wash., and Paul Banke of Azusa both stopped their opponents to move into the tournament’s semifinals.

Banke, 122, raised his record to 13-3 by stopping Alberto Mercado (29-8) of Orlando, Fla., in the third round. Mercado weighed 121 3/4.
