Mubarak Awad, the Palestinian-American ordered deported from Israel on Friday for his activism in the current unrest in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, has launched a hunger strike in protest. Awad’s wife, Nancy Nye, said her husband began the hunger strike after his jailing Thursday night and that police had taken away his mattress and blankets as punishment. She said the 44-year-old head of the Jerusalem-based Center for Nonviolent Studies is meeting with his lawyers to decide on appealing the deportation order. “We’re realistic about the situation,” she said. “The high court has never overturned a deportation order.”
