Spain ordered its consulates around the world to deny visas to all South African athletes seeking to compete in Spain, including golfers entered in next week’s $374,000 Spanish Open golf championship.
Alberto Buitron, a spokesman for the Spanish foreign ministry, said the new guidelines prohibit all South African athletes from competing in Spain. Exceptions would be made if the South Africans were to compete in events protesting apartheid, South Africa’s official policy of racial segregation.
