In the First Place, It’s Baseball That’s to Blame

Dave Pallone is a scab. What NL President Giamatti doesn’t seem to realize as he’s denouncing Pete Rose with his Victorian moralizing is that major league baseball is to blame here.

By strong-arming the umpires in the ’79 strike, baseball allowed unqualified men like Pallone on the field in place of real umpires. Nine years and four seconds (which is how long Pallone took to make his call) later, this particular scab has broken, leaving blood on major league baseball.

Which is what baseball deserves, having lacked the integrity to deal fairly with the umpires in the first place.
