Local News in Brief : New Agency, Same Fare

A private transportation agency formed as a cost-saving alternative for the San Gabriel Valley will have the same fare structure--for at least its first six months--as the Southern California Rapid Transit District.

At its first meeting this week, the board for the Foothill Transit Zone narrowly approved the fare structure over objections that it should be lower than RTD’s.

County Supervisor Pete Schabarum, who sided with the minority in the 12-8 vote, said fares may be reduced after initial savings are realized.

Service will begin in July with two routes from the eastern tip of the San Gabriel Valley to downtown Los Angeles. The round-trip fare is $2.25 for one route and $2.50 for the other, while monthly passes will remain at $80 and $92.

The zone is slated to take over one-third of all RTD routes in the area over the next two years.
