USC, UCLA, Pepperdine Women Get NCAA Tennis Bids

USC, UCLA and Pepperdine are among the 20 teams that have received invitations to the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. women’s tennis tournament.

The team event will start Wednesday at UCLA’s L.A. Tennis Center and end Sunday. The individual tournament is scheduled May 16-19.

There will be four first-round matches Wednesday--16th-seeded Pepperdine, 21-3, vs. No. 17 Texas, 16-10; No. 13 Trinity of Texas, 10-11, vs. No. 20 Harvard, 20-6; No. 18 South Carolina, 15-9, vs. No. 14 BYU, 15-8; and No. 19 Duke, 23-5, vs. No. 15 Arizona, 15-8.

The round-of-16 matches will be played Thursday, No. 1 Florida, 26-1, meeting the Pepperdine-Texas winner; No. 8 Miami, 15-8, vs. No. 10 Arizona State, 16-10; No. 4 UCLA, 18-5, vs. Trinity or Harvard; No. 9 SMU, 20-6, vs. No. 5 California, 15-8; No. 6 Kentucky, 20-4, vs. No. 12 Oklahoma State, 21-7; South Carolina or BYU vs. No. 3 USC, 17-4; No. 11 Indiana, 22-5, vs. No. 7 Georgia, 21-6; and Duke or Arizona vs. No. 2 Stanford, 22-2.

If form holds, USC will play two-time defending champion Stanford in one semifinal, and UCLA will play Florida in the other.
