Legislation on Child Care
I am writing to praise your editorial (“Long-Term Investment,” April 21) regarding Mayor Bradley’s plans for after-school care for the thousands of “latchkey” children. A program such as the one he proposes would give children an alternative to the unsupervised, unproductive “running the streets” that is now the only activity many children have. It also would provide peace of mind for the many single parents who must work in order to survive and give their children a chance for a better life.
When I was in this position years ago, my productivity and accomplishments on the job were seriously affected because of the worry about the welfare of my children after school. Our children are our future. Let us not trash them.
