A transient couple suspected of committing a brutal slaying in Indiana two weeks ago were arrested in San Diego this week and will be returned to Indiana today, police said.
Police in Hammond, Ind., had issued a no-bail warrant for the arrests of Cindy Lou Landress, 30, and William Lewellen, 38, after the slaying of a local man on April 23.
The victim was stabbed more than 20 times during a residential robbery. His pickup truck and money were stolen.
Police allege that the couple drove the stolen pickup part of the way to San Diego, then ditched it and hitchhiked the last leg.
Police received a tip through the department’s Crime Stoppers hot line that the couple arrived here Monday. They were arrested the next day in the 4500 block of University Avenue.
They will be taken to Indiana by Hammond detectives.
