RTD Fare Subsidy Proposed
Los Angeles City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky proposed today that the city pick up part of the cost of an RTD bus ride during peak traffic hours, a move that he said would reduce traffic and attract 35,000 new riders.
Yaroslavsky, expected to challenge Mayor Tom Bradley next year, said that there should be a rush-hour subsidy of 35 cents per fare, to be paid from a combination of rapid transit funds and cuts in current city programs. At present RTD rates, this would reduce the basic fare from 85 cents to 50 cents.
