Local News in Brief : Councilman Appointed

One week after the death of fellow member Tom Mills, the Carson City Council on Tuesday appointed John Anderson, a city parks and recreation commissioner, to fill the vacancy, ending a two-year period in which the council had only four members most of the time.
Councilwoman Vera Robles DeWitt said the move, approved by a 3-1 vote, was intended to promote calm and stability. However, after the appointment, one passed-over contender accused the three members who voted for Anderson of appointing a “lackey.” The three were reelected April 12.
Aaron Carter, who finished just behind the three incumbents in the April 12 election, said he should have been appointed.
“They have a fourth vote on the council,” Carter said of his three opponents. “He’s a lackey.”
Councilwoman Sylvia Muise, the only member to vote against Anderson, said she knew his allegiance was with her council opponents and added that she preferred a special election to fill the seat.
The appointment of Anderson, who is black, restores an ethnic balance to the council. Mills had been the only black member.
