“The Phantom of the Opera” was named best Broadway musical and “M. Butterfly” best Broadway play this week in the Outer Critics Circle awards. Two other awards went to “Butterfly” on Monday: B. D. Wong, who plays the title character, was cited for outstanding debut of an actor, and David Henry Hwang, the play’s author, received the John Gasner Award for an American playwright. Michael Crawford, who plays the lead in “Phantom,” was named outstanding actor in a musical.
