College Roundup : Irvine Men Lead After PCAA Tennis Semifinal Round

UC Irvine held a slim lead over UC Santa Barbara after the semifinal round of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. men’s tennis championships Saturday at Las Cruces, N.M.
Irvine has 45 points, Santa Barbara 38 and third-place San Jose State 26.
The Anteaters advanced all six singles players and all three doubles teams into today’s finals. Today, Irvine will face Santa Barbara in six finals--four singles matches and two doubles.
Mark Kaplan, Irvine’s No. 1 singles player, defeated Par Sanquvist of New Mexico State, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, in his semifinal match. Kaplan faces Malcolm Allen of San Jose State today.
Trevor Kronemann defeated Marcos Garzo of Fresno State, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. He faces Kip Brady of UC Santa Barbara in the final.
Kronemann and Mike Briggs teamed to win in No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-3, over Drew Denny and Greg Fallia of Cal State Long Beach. The Irvine team will meet Scott Morse and Steve Leier of Santa Barbara in the final.
In the PCAA women’s championships:
Irvine was tied for fourth with Santa Barbara, each with 28 points, after the semifinal round at Honolulu.
San Diego State leads with 37 points, Nevada Las Vegas is second with 31 and the University of the Pacific is third with 29.
Cal State Fullerton is in eighth place with just seven points, trailing sixth-place Fresno State (22) and seventh-place University of Hawaii (11). Cal State Long Beach is ninth with four points and San Jose State has two points.
In No. 6 singles, Irvine’s Stacey Cadigan advanced to today’s final. The Anteaters’ No. 2 doubles team of Kathy Rose and Courtney Weichsel also advanced.
In nonconference baseball:
UC San Diego 4, Southern California College 2--Host UC San Diego scored two runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie. Kevin Judson walked and then scored on a double by Curt Assayag.
Assayag, trying for third on a late throw home, scored on a wild throw to third.
Judson went 3 for 3 with a home run for UCSD, which had a complete game from John Adamson. Robert Mansfield (6-4) struck out eight in seven innings for SCC (22-24).
Josh Johnson had an RBI single for SCC in the fourth.
In PCAA softball:
Cal Poly Pomona 3-4, Cal State Fullerton 2-1 (first game 16 innings)--In the first game, visiting Fullerton led, 2-1, entering the seventh, but Pomona’s Alison Stoell hit a leadoff home run to send it into extra innings.
In the 16th, Heather DeLuca doubled, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a fielder’s choice by Kris Rokosz.
Anjie Bryant (24-7) pitched all 16 innings for Fullerton. Lori Thompson (7-6) won in relief of Rokosz.
In the second game, Pomona scored one run in the first inning, two in the second and another in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Nicky Luce (21-7) went 2 for 2 and pitched the Broncos to the win. Stoell added a hit and a pair of RBIs.
Fullerton, which is ranked seventh, is 48-16 overall and 23-9 in PCAA play. Pomona, ranked 11th, is 46-13 and 24-8.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. softball:
CS Northridge 4-3, Chapman 0-0--Debbie Dickman (20-3) and Delanee Anderson (11-4) pitched shutouts in the doubleheader sweep by host Northridge.
Chapman’s Jackie Blake (14-8) and Cheri Schreck (13-9) suffered the losses. Lisa Falksken went 2 for 3 for Chapman (36-24, 9-11) in the second game.
