WASHINGTON — President Reagan decided today at a meeting with his key national security advisers to extend U.S. Navy protection to neutral ships that come under attack in the Persian Gulf, a U.S. official said.
An announcement would be made after further consultations with Congress, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The White House refused afterward to discuss the 30-minute late-morning session, but officials said that the agenda did include the “rules of engagement” under which the Navy fleet in the Persian Gulf operates.
