At least 10 Eastern Airlines planes were sidelined with safety violations Thursday and Friday as federal inspectors found problems including a fuel leak, a missing maintenance log and a cracked wing flap, the Machinists union said. The airline and the Federal Aviation Administration refused to confirm the number, saying they have stopped detailing the violations after grounding six Eastern planes on Thursday. “They didn’t want to see a running box score,” said FAA spokesman John Leyden. “We’ll summarize it at the end of the inspection.” Four planes were found to have safety violations Friday, according to a Machinists official who spoke on condition of anonymity.
