NEWCASTLE, South Africa — A fisherman rescued a newborn from a plastic trash bag floating on a river after hearing the baby crying, police said Tuesday.
The baby, whom police called “Moses,” was wrapped in newspaper with his umbilical cord still attached when he was found Monday, according to police. He was in satisfactory condition Tuesday at Newcastle hospital about 180 miles southeast of Johannesburg.
The air in the sealed bag had kept it afloat and saved the life of the baby, born about an hour before it was rescued, according to police.
