The League of Women Voters on Tuesday canceled a planned June 4 debate between Republican presidential candidates in Torrance after Kansas Sen. Robert Dole dropped out of the race.
“The debate has been officially, finally and forever canceled,” league spokeswoman Janice Kaplan said in Washington. Also canceled was a scheduled debate in Rochester, N.Y.
The decision to drop the debates had been expected since Bush swept the March 8 Super Tuesday primaries and opened a commanding lead over Dole.
The league is still planning to hold a nationally televised debate between Democratic presidential contenders in Torrance on June 5, two days before the California presidential primary.
