Cray Research introduced its fastest supercomputer, and Unisys Corp. and IBM announced new forays into the market for computers that use the Unix operating system. Cray said its new Y-MP-832, at $20 million, offers up to three times the performance of the largest of the Cray X-MP systems but can run all the same programs. IBM said that by 1989 it will offer Unix workstations with more than four times the performance of today’s RT PC. Unisys introduced the U 7000 series, which it described as a family of superminicomputers ranging in price from $190,000 to $295,000.
