Local News in Brief : Smoking Ban Advances
- Share via
With a dissenting vote from Councilman Terry Birdsall, a smoker, the Lawndale City Council has given preliminary approval to a law that would ban smoking in public buildings.
“You’ve got two meetings to give it up,” Mayor Sarann Kruse jokingly told Birdsall as he took a long drag on his cigarette, one of many he typically puffs during the hours-long council sessions.
Birdsall, outnumbered by four nonsmokers, grinned and threatened to filibuster on the ordinance, but then simply voted against it.
The ordinance will be submitted to the council for a final vote Feb. 4 and, if approved, would become effective in 30 days.
