It is unfortunate that Renee Ferrarro, in expressing her support for Bon Jovi, found it necessary to chide U2 for singing about politics and making “statements” (Calendar Letters, Jan. 17).
It is precisely U2’s deep concern for religious and political issues that has resulted in their becoming one of the most respected bands on the music scene today.
Ferrarro would have the reader believe that music fans are completely disinterested in politics and that U2 is boring and relentless because they write lyrics that touch upon pertinent social issues.
The fact is, U2, in displaying a strong sense of social consciousness, have not only influenced many people to take part in the struggle against human injustice, but have also proven themselves to be songwriters of great depth and awareness.
