South Gate : Truck Traffic to Be Studied
A 45-day moratorium has been imposed on construction of new truck terminals or expansion of existing ones while the city studies traffic congestion, noise, air quality and safety related to truck traffic. The South Gate City Council on Monday voted 4 to 1 for an urgency ordinance that imposed the moratorium.
The ordinance states in part that “the City of South Gate perceives that the environment of the city is being damaged or may be damaged by the unregulated proliferation of (the) trucking industry within the city limits. . . . “
A citywide environmental impact study is expected to be conducted to determine the extent of the problem and suggest some solutions.
