Jan Stephenson shot a five-under-par 65 at Carmel Valley Ranch Saturday to take the third-round lead in the $250,000 Spalding Invitational golf tournament at Carmel Valley with a total of 12-under-par 201.
Lennie Clements, the first-round leader with a 62, bounced back from a terrible 77 at Pebble Beach with a seven-under-par 63 to move into second place at 202.
Tied for third at 203 were Johnny Miller (64), and Tim Norris, who shot a 62.
The top LPGA players have been invited to the tournament since 1979, when tournament founder-director Howard Firstman came up with the idea of having women golfers compete against some of the top male pros.
The women are given advantages off the tee to allow them to hit the same or similar iron shots to the greens. The best finish by any woman was last year, when Stephenson and Patty Sheehan tied for fourth place.
Ian Woosnam of Wales and Ossie Moore of Australia each shot a six-under-par 66 to share the halfway lead at 135 in the $360,000 Sanctuary Cove tournament at Gold Coast, Australia.
Raymond Floyd and Australian Lucien Tinkler were at 136. Floyd had a 67, while Tinkler shot his second straight 68.
