Oil Slick Endangers Birds on Dutch Coast

IJMUIDEN, Netherlands — Hundreds of volunteers battled Saturday to save thousands of sea birds stricken by a 19-mile oil slick along the southern Dutch coast.
The slick, whose origin has not yet been established, reached the North Sea coast late Friday and the first fouled birds were found Saturday morning, a coast guard spokesman said.
Authorities launched a sea and air search to find the vessel responsible for the oil slick, one of the worst to occur here in recent years, the spokesman said.
The 15-foot-wide slick washed ashore between Wassenaar, a village six miles north of The Hague, and Haamstede, in the province of Zeeland.
