Redondo Beach City Clerk John Oliver said Friday that he has taken out nomination papers to run for the 51st Assembly seat, which covers Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Torrance, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and part of San Pedro.
The seat is currently held by Republican Gerald N. Felando, who has said he plans to run for the congressional seat of Rep. Daniel E. Lungren (R-Long Beach) if the Legislature confirms Lungren’s nomination as state treasurer.
The 51st District is considered a Republican stronghold. Oliver, who was overwhelmingly reelected city clerk last March, is president of the Lincoln Republican Club of the 51st Assembly District.
Other Republicans who have expressed interest in the seat are Torrance Councilman Dan Walker, 47; Deane Dana III, 35, assistant director of the state Department of Aging and son of the Los Angeles County supervisor; Ken Bell, 36, principal assistant in Sacramento to Assembly Republican Leader Pat Nolan of Glendale; William Beverly, 37, a Torrance attorney and son of state Sen. Robert G. Beverly (R-Manhattan Beach), and Rancho Palos Verdes Councilman Robert Ryan, 57.
Oliver, 39, said his chances are “just as good as anybody else’s because it’s going to be a free-for-all.”
