It always amuses me to read letters from people complaining about the supposedly undeserving success of various entertainment personalities. A case in point is the letter from Kay Klein (Calendar Letters, Jan. 3).
Klein obviously dislikes David Letterman, and, of course, she is entitled to that opinion. She wonders how his show could possibly survive for 8 years.
Well, it’s quite simple. He is so good at what he does, so smooth, so effortless, that people like Klein think anybody could do it. Why do you think he never has guest hosts a la Carson? Because “Late Night” is David Letterman. (And Letterman is very funny.)
The show would be completely different without him. Of course he needs writers, and Paul Shaffer and the gang. Who in that business works totally alone?
