Brazilian police shot the leader of an attempted prison breakout and rescued the last two hostages to end an uprising at Porto Alegre’s Jacui prison. Jose Santos, 32, serving a 42-year term for dealing in narcotics, was critically wounded in a shoot-out when police attacked. Two prisoners and two of the hostages, the prison’s chief 1868963955overpowered guards, seized their weapons and took 27 hostages. In addition to the two hostages slain, another was critically wounded.
