The NFL Players Assn. is scheduled to return to federal court today in its effort to accomplish what the 24-day players’ strike could not: End the NFL’s free-agency system.
The union will file motions in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis, seeking a preliminary injunction and partial summary judgment in its antitrust lawsuit against the league owners.
The league is expected to make a cross-motion for a ruling that it is exempt from the labor law and that the old bargaining agreement, though expired, still may be enforced by owners.
Attorneys for the 1,600-member players’ union are asking the judge to prevent the 28 owners from imposing current bargaining restrictions on 527 players whose contracts expire in February.
