WASHINGTON — The government instituted deportation proceedings today against a La Puente, Calif., man, alleging that he persecuted unarmed civilians as a guard at Auschwitz during World War II.
The Justice Department said that Josef Eckert, a native of Yugoslavia, served as a guard from 1943-45 in the SS Death’s Head Battalion at Auschwitz. According to records, Eckert entered the United States in 1956 under the Refugee Relief Act of 1953 but never applied for U.S. citizenship.
