Complaining about a lack of Christmas spirit, two members of the Redondo Beach City Council walked out of a council meeting Monday--effectively ending it.
After listening to Mayor Barbara J. Doerr and Councilman Archie Snow bicker for several minutes, Councilwoman Kay Horrell said in a quivering voice: “I do not hear in any of this conversation a spirit of Christmas. . . . I for one refuse to sit here on a very holy week--Christmas--and listen to this kind of conversation. . . . “
She then left, along with Councilman John Chapman, who announced, “Merry Christmas to you all.”
Their departure left the council without a quorum and unable to legally conduct city business.
City officials quickly scheduled a special meeting for 5:30 tonight so they can vote on the paying of bills and salaries. Horrell said she will show up.
