The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service will not require farmers to file forms stating the immigration status of their workers until next December, Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.) told the annual convention of the California Farm Bureau in Fresno. Other employers had to begin recording an employee’s immigration status on so-called I-9 forms as of last Sept. 1. In response to an inquiry from his office, Wilson said the U.S. Department of Justice has announced that it will not prosecute employers of seasonal agricultural workers for failing to complete the forms prior to Nov. 30, 1988.
