X-Rays Help Customs at Mexico City Airport

MEXICO CITY — Four X-ray machines have been put into operation in the Mexico City airport to detect drugs, weapons and other illegal imports. The machines also spot electronic equipment, crystal, chemicals and explosives, Alberto K. Tacher, customs director for Mexico’s Treasury Department, said Saturday during an inauguration of the equipment.
The system will speed up processing of the 3,000 airline passengers a day--bringing a total of more than 6,000 suitcases--who arrive at the airport here, he said. He said X-ray machines will be installed in all of the country’s 36 international airports.
