Garden Grove : Cable Firm Paying for Traffic Signal Project

The Garden Grove Cable Television Corp. has awarded the city $28,000 for the final phase of a project to convert its computerized traffic-signal system from telephone lines to cable channels.
Karl Huy, the city’s traffic engineer supervisor, said that with the grant, 90% of the city’s traffic signals will be on line on the cable channels by next year.
He said conversion to the channels will save Garden Grove more than $30,000 a year. Aside from initial activation costs, there are no fees for cable transmission of the traffic signals, Huy said.
Funds from the Federal Aid Urban Project, administered by the California Department of Transportation, were used to upgrade the traffic signal master computer. However, the grant from the cable TV company was needed to complete the last phase of the conversion.
