Patrick Gourley is a young English painter stuck in a timid style. His “Semaphore” series--sheets of paper meted out into slightly varying triangles--signal little more than the early, throwaway stages of a painting study.
Other oils and pastels offer tilted blocks of bright hues airlifted onto colored fields. A couple of larger works contain a row of small, overpainted lead rectangles and raw, watery areas that come off as rather desperate attempts at a fluid, experimental look. Gourley does best to concentrate on color, as in “Sign Red, Sign Green,” where a thick, dense red, a matte dead green and a crackle of white coexist on a slippery black ground. (Turske & Whitney Gallery, 962 N. La Brea Ave., to Nov. 30.)
